What Does an AI Readiness Assessment Look Like?

Before you spend a dime on AI licenses, you need to know two things: what does your business actually need, and is your environment ready to handle it safely. That’s what a readiness assessment is for. Think of it like a pre-flight checklist – boring, but the reason you land safely.

A solid assessment has two main parts.

Part 1: Business Needs Analysis This is the “why are we doing this?” conversation. The goal is to find where AI will actually move the needle, not just where it sounds cool.​

  • Interview leadership on top business priorities
  • Survey staff about their biggest time-wasters and bottlenecks
  • Identify repetitive tasks ripe for automation (email triage, report generation, meeting notes)
  • Map out which departments would benefit first (usually sales, finance, ops, and support)
  • Define what "success" looks like in real numbers – hours saved, faster turnaround, fewer errors

If you skip this step, you’ll end up with AI tools nobody uses because they don’t solve anyone’s actual problem.

Part 2: Security Readiness This is the “are we safe to flip the switch?” conversation. AI tools like Copilot inherit whatever security posture you already have – good or bad.

  • Audit SharePoint and OneDrive sharing permissions (oversharing is the #1 risk)
  • Review who has access to sensitive files, folders, and Teams sites
  • Confirm MFA is enforced on every account
  • Check that conditional access policies are in place
  • Verify Microsoft Purview is configured (or plan for it)
  • Review your incident response and data loss prevention setup
  • Identify any regulated data (HIPAA, CMMC, PCI) that needs special handling

The output. A short report that tells you exactly where the gaps are, what to fix first, and a realistic timeline to go live. No surprises, no scrambling.
