How Does Copilot Protect Our Data?

This is the question every executive should be asking before rolling out AI. The good news: Microsoft has built Copilot with security and compliance baked in from day one. It’s not an afterthought. Here’s what’s actually happening behind the scenes to keep your data safe.
Your data stays in your tenant.

When Copilot processes a request, your data doesn’t leave your Microsoft 365 environment. It’s not sent to OpenAI, it’s not stored on some random server, and it’s not shared with other customers. Your tenant is your tenant.

No training on your data.

This is a big one. Microsoft does not use your prompts, your files, or your responses to train their public AI models. What happens in your tenant stays in your tenant.
Encryption everywhere. Your data is encrypted both when it’s sitting still (at rest) and when it’s moving around (in transit). Same encryption standards Microsoft uses for the rest of M365 – which is to say, very strong.

Permissions are respected.
Copilot inherits the access controls you already have in place. If a user can’t see a file, Copilot can’t see it for them either. No backdoors, no shortcuts.
Compliance coverage

Copilot aligns with the major frameworks businesses care about:

Audit logging built in

Every Copilot interaction can be logged through Microsoft Purview — who used it, when, and what they asked.

The bottom line. Copilot is one of the more secure AI options on the market today. But security is a shared job – Microsoft handles their part, and you need to handle yours (permissions, training, and policies).
