How Do We Shut Down Unsanctioned "Shadow AI"?

Shadow AI is when employees use AI tools the company never approved – usually free ChatGPT, random browser extensions, or personal Claude accounts. It’s almost never malicious. People are just trying to get their work done faster. But every unsanctioned tool is a potential data leak, compliance violation, or audit nightmare.

  • Tell staff clearly which tools are okay and which aren't
  • Make the approved tool easier to use than the unapproved ones

Step 3 – Lock down the rest.

  • Block known shadow AI sites at the firewall or DNS layer
  • Add AI tools to your acceptable use policy with real consequences

Step 4 – Keep watching. New AI tools launch every week. Make shadow AI monitoring part of the monthly security rhythm.
