What are Common AI Adoption Mistakes?

After watching dozens of businesses roll out AI over the past couple of years, the same mistakes keep showing up. The tools are different, the industries are different, but the missteps are almost always the same. Here are the big ones to avoid.

Buying licenses before having a plan

The #1 mistake. A leader buys 50 licenses, hands them out, and nothing happens. Six months later the licenses get cancelled and AI gets labelled “overhyped.”

No training
Without a couple of hours of hands-on training, your team uses Copilot like a glorified search bar and misses 90% of its value.
Ignoring security and permissions first
Rolling out Copilot before cleaning up SharePoint and OneDrive permissions is asking for trouble. Sensitive files get surfaced to the wrong people, and suddenly AI gets the blame for an oversharing problem that existed long before.
Skipping the policy
If you don’t tell your team what’s allowed, they’ll figure it out themselves – usually by pasting client data into free tools you’ve never heard of. A simple, one-page AI use policy saves a lot of headaches.
Trying to boil the ocean
Rolling out AI to the entire company on day one almost always flops. Start small. Pick a pilot group. Learn what works. Then expand.
Forgetting the human side.
Employees who feel threatened by AI won’t use it. Employees who feel empowered by it will. The difference is in how leadership communicates the why.
Measuring the wrong things
“How many licenses did we deploy?” is the wrong question. “How many hours did we save?” is the right one.
Avoid these, and you’re already ahead of most.
