What is Microsoft Purview?

If Copilot is the engine that helps your team work faster, Purview is the seatbelt, airbag, and dashboard warning lights rolled into one. It’s Microsoft’s data governance and compliance platform — and it’s hard to do AI right without it.

What Purview actually does

Finds your sensitive data. It scans across Microsoft 365 (and beyond) to identify things like Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, health records, or anything else you tell it to watch for.
Labels it. You can tag files as Public, Internal, Confidential, or whatever your business needs. Those labels travel with the file wherever it goes.
Protects it. Data Loss Prevention (DLP) rules can stop a file from being emailed externally, shared with the wrong people, or copied to a USB drive.
Tracks it. Every action gets logged. Who opened the file, who shared it, who deleted it – all visible in one place.
Helps with compliance. Built-in templates cover HIPAA, GDPR, CMMC, and a long list of other frameworks.

Remember how Copilot respects existing permissions? Purview takes it one step further. With sensitivity labels in place, you can tell Copilot, “Hey, don’t summarize files marked Confidential into a public Teams chat.” It’s the guardrail that keeps Copilot from accidentally surfacing the wrong information.
