How Do We Identify Inactive Guests?

Guest accounts pile up fast. A vendor here, a contractor there, an outside consultant from a project two years ago – and before you know it, your Microsoft 365 tenant has hundreds of guest users, most of whom haven’t logged in since who-knows-when. Each one is a potential back door. Here’s how to find them.
Use Entra ID:
  • Go to Entra Admin Center → Users → All users → Filter by User type = Guest
  • Add the Last sign-in date column to spot dormant accounts
  • Sort by last sign-in to surface the oldest offenders fast
Run an Access Review:
  • In Entra ID Governance, create an Access Review for guest users
  • Set it to auto-remove guests with no recent sign-in activity (30, 60, or 90 days)
  • Assign site or group owners to confirm whether each guest still needs access
Other reports worth running:
  • Microsoft 365 admin center → Reports → Usage for guest activity
  • SharePoint Admin Center → Shared with External Users report
  • Microsoft Purview for deeper data access trails
Then act on it.
  • Remove guests with no sign-in in 90+ days
  • Disable accounts before deleting (in case you need to restore)
  • Automate this review quarterly going forward

Fewer guests = smaller attack surface. Simple as that.
